about

"Ant Ballad" is an original song that was written, performed, recorded, and produced over a couple of days in quarantine by Harvard Divinity Student, Lindsay Sanwald (aka the multi-instrumentalist musician called Idgy Dean). This song was composed specifically for the U of U Coyote Chaplaincy "Renew" endeavor, led by Terry Tempest Williams together with her class, Finding Beauty in a Broken World. Lindsay/Idgy also cut together this music video for the song, using only the footage on her phone of her friends and community back home in New York City. The video is not only a love letter to NYC and its local artists, but also a testament to the creative spirit and energy that can keep us all inspired, moving, and hopeful for the positive transformation and healing that happens when we bring our talents together. The top of the track features an excerpt from a recent lecture at HDS by Professor Cornel West on ethical connection and solidarity. Throughout the track is a C note drone, associated with the root chakra and our physical foundations. Referred to as a tonic note (Shadaja) in Indian Raga music, this note stays in place–stays at home–like a constant presence of God.

lyrics

“...so many of our fellow human beings and even fellow citizens could be so thoroughly attracted to various versions of ethical connection and solidarity. And it’s critical to keep in mind that when we talk about these two contrasting ethics, that there’s a sense in which we’re using them as ideal types just the way Max Weber talked about them. That when we, when we actually dip them into history we see the way in which they overlap, they’re intertwined, ideas… ” -Professor Cornel West

I want to save the World,
But I'm too busy trying to save me.
I want to do something right for all of you.
But I'm too busy trying to fix me.
I don't wanna be left alone.
Yeah I don’t wanna...
Here!
Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes
The world's anxiety (oh, it's your family).
Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes
The world's anxiety (oh, it's your family).

Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes the world,
We're your family.
Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes, Everybody echoes the world,
We're your family.
